OVS - The Act of a Desperate Man

Birds too it, bees do it, evening educated flees do it, let's do it, let's write a book...

Everyone seems to be writing a book these days. There are now more books in print than ever before in human history, with print on demand, anyone can publish their book, and buy a single copy to put on their shelves. Of all the books written, how many are read and remembered? Who cares? I'm going to do it anyway, just so I can say I've written one.

I've been pestered by a few friends for some time now to write a novel, and so, I am going to announce that I'm going to start, in the hope that I actually will. But I probably won't.

But I mean to.

I often wonder what people's motivation for writing a book is? Perhaps it's the idea that you can get paid for not going into work and sitting in the spare room playing on the computer? Just by being you and being so terrible clever and imaginative. There's also fame and money of course. Unfortunately as they usually come served on the same plate, it doesn't sound that appetising to me. I'll take the money with just a small relish of recognition if that's okay, waiter?

I'm going to chose one of my OVS comic characters for the novel, not Dirk Despair, though the request has been noted! Though if I can't be bothered to write this one, then a Dirk Despair Novel hasn't much chance :). Basically I'll be able to get out a lifetime's worth of comic strip stories for one character in one book in six months. I'll actually be able to finish a story.

But I have no ambitions to be a novelist, to make a living writing novels, so it may well be a one off experiment. There was a previous experiment about ten years ago, which was conducted with a lot of Jack Daniels. But we do not speak of the results, though occasionally there will be a thud from the attic in the middle of the night, and I recall it's terrible ghastliness.

The first person to e-mail me guessing the character who will star in the book can have a free copy whenever it gets written. If it does.

Which it might.
