Comics - Impaler #1
Well, due to unforeseen events (Christmas, who saw that coming?) it's taken me a while to getting around to picking up the first issue of Impaler from Top Cow comics. The story is by William Harms and the art is by Matt Timson.
Following on from the previous series we arrive to find New York nuked, the vampires haven't been contained, and a top squad of military muscle sent to retrieve a missing secretary of state is walking into a scene from hell. Meanwhile, Vlad the Impaler stalks the Earth trying to defeat his old foe 'The Great Beast' with only a broken police detective to help him.
Matt Timson, who claims he was 'tricked into drawing comics' previously drew strips for Solar Wind and Omnivistascope such as Death Squid, No-Eyed Jim and 54 Jones. Omnivistascope's loss is Impaler's gain.
And very lovely looking the comic is too with some superb art by Matt. Lovely images of weird and monstrous things, all trying to bite bits off people. And there are some sublime panel sequences which Matt must be pleased aren't covered up with lots of my words. A lot of the scenes are wintry snow-covered affairs and are particularly beautiful.
You can order the new series which has Matt Timson on art from your local comic shop. And you can also read the first issue of the original series on the Top Cow website and the series is available as a trade paperback.
