Hawk the Slayer over the years has become my favourite film.
I am almost certain I saw the movie on a double bill with Saturn 3 as a child, but my memories of seemingly endless cinema trips in the seventies and early eighties are dim. Saturn 3, is a story about a homicidal sex pest robot and not really suitable fare for kids at all thinking back on it! But Hawk the Slayer was a real treat. Hawk the Slayer has appeared many times on TV over the years and when I was young, I had a poster of Hawk the Slayer on my bedroom wall that came from a local video shop. You too may have discovered the film as a child, perhaps you had the novelisation written by Terry and Harry?
And perhaps, like myself you rediscovered the film in a drunken haze, coming back from the pub and finding Hawk on late night TV? You may have had a wry chuckle at some of the special effects (which were advanced for their time) and the fantasy dialogue. But if you're like me, the film held a strong fascination for you. It was a British swords and sorcery movie, the first of its kind, and the film is full of incidental plot and detail and a myriad of TV and film stars.
I've been lucky enough to meet and chat with Terry Marcel, the director of Hawk the Slayer as well as talk to Lesley, the daughter of Producer Harry Robertson. Both of them share the same love of the film as myself and I'm sure many of you out there do too. You can read my six page interview with Terry Marcel in issue 3 of Omnivistascope, which is on sale in the shop.
And while that's all for the moment folks, there is more to come. I'll be looking at the film, the people who made it, the merchandise, its fans and their memories in due course.
There may also be news of new Hawk projects, but that my friends is a story for another time...
All the best
Paul
